(Circa October-February 2017)
While the party was in Ysgard, they were accused of aiding an illegal smuggling ring in Rigus.
The Dwarf Finnegan, Toby's former owner from the Gate-Town of Rigus, was a smuggler and a fence for stolen goods. In the past, the Planeswalkers had aided him in breaking into a slaver's basement in order to retrieve their weapons and armor (The story so far). At the current time, Finnegan was convicted of being involved in illegal smuggling in Rigus, and was convinced by the Black Lotus to implicate the Bishop and friends as aides to his operation.
A trial was scheduled in Sigil for the Party to be extradited to Rigus to stand further trial. If the Party tried to avoid the trial, they would become wanted criminals, and could be pursued by the Mercykillers or legal bounty hunters. They got in to talk to Finnegan, but he had no reason to cut a deal with them, as reducing his sentence was the most important thing for him.
At around the same time, compatriots of Martigan's (members of the Church of Pelor and some of the Hobgoblin community) began to be murdered. The killer was writing Martigan's name on the wall in blood, leading Martigan to be a suspect.
Some research found that the most likely culprit was the recruiter who had sold Martigan into the Blood Wars (17), and who Tobers had given to the Baatezu Marrow Gristlegut to be tortured for a week for failing to meet his quotas. He was angry at the party, and particularly at Martigan, and wanted vengeance. As well, his mind had been twisted by mysterious forces, likely by the Black Lotus attempting to make him a thorn in the Party's side.
The party tracked him down and brought him to the Harmonium (Inspector Drept), to clear Martigan's name. Martigan decided to care for a Hobgoblin boy who had been left an orphan as a result of the murders (possibly named Gavin) until he could bring him to the land of the Hobgoblins.
In the meantime, the trial for the entire party was drawing closer.
For trials in Sigil, judges are randomly selected from the twelve factions. The Party's judge was a magistrate named Lady Simone du Bouvoire. The Black Lotus was worried that she would rule in the Party's favour, and had her kidnapped by a group of Evil Adventurers.
Luckily, mysterious Druids who were friendly to Cal sent him a note, saying that the Magistrate had had a midnight visitor, and that there had been sounds of a struggle after the stranger entered her house. The next morning, two porters had left her house carrying an unusually large box. Afterwards, she was seen leaving her flat and heading to the courts as usual.
The Planeswalkers, suspecting that she had been kidnapped, had Silverpaw tracks her scent using clothing that Skippy took from her flat. They managed to find information that linked Shrek the Half-Ogre and Jeb the Whisper Gnome of the Evil Party to the kidnapping.
Dash-A spoke to Factor Ombidias at the Great Foundry, whose men had seen Shrek, Jeb, and some black armoured men visiting the Defenestrated Paladin in Hopeless. He also mentioned that there was a two-way portal in Sigil leading right to the Paladin. It was through a brick archway in the alley behind the Grim Journeyman tavern just off Ragmonger's Lane in the Hive Ward, keyed by a palm-sized shard of glass. The Planeswalkers headed to Hopeless through the portal, making sure to remove or hide any colour on their persons first so as not to break the law. They tracked the two suspects to an abandoned fortress far outside of town. The Evil Party attempted to wear the Planeswalkers down with spells and henchmen as they stormed the fortress. Reinhalt and some other Party members sneaked in through the back of the fortress using Stone Shape. Once the main Party was inside the front, the Evil Party attacked, and Jeb killed Martigan with a single blow. The rest of the Party escaped with the Magistrate, and hurried to the gate, as the trial was set to start soon. However, the Evil Party ambushed them just before they could step through the portal. Although Shrek and the Cleric were killed, Jeb managed to assassinate the Magistrate.
The Party captured Jeb, and gave him to Inspector Drept. They used money they had gained from the adventure to resurrect the Magistrate and reincarnate Martigan, who came back as a Half-Hobgoblin, as if by destiny.
The doppleganger Magistrate was exposed. The trial was delayed because of the incident.
Reinhalt had his contacts do some digging, and the Party learned that the prosecutor, Lieutenant Inquisitor Tenneson, was an ambitious and unethical man who was easily manipulated. For example, after he was promoted to Lieutenant Inquisitor, he dug up as much dirt as he could on his main rival, a hobgoblin named Redfang, and had him busted down to private for some minor offenses.
According to Reinhalt's spies, he had been contacted with a human priest from the Brotherhood of the Toll of Doom, and had started the trial against the Party immediately afterwards.
The Party somehow found enough information about him to have him arrested before the trial, so it was thrown out of court.
After the Party was cleared, Martigan decided to head for the Hobgoblin homeland with the boy, and to try to reunite the warring tribes under his banner.
Reinhalt arranged for Toby to have a chance to face Finnegan in combat (in Sylvania), which Toby won with ease. However, he chose not to kill the Dwarf. Reinhalt then said he would help Finnegan to escape his sentence if he gave the Party information that would help them to free Toby's parents.
Finnegan gave Reinhalt information regarding Captain Wraithborne and Oreus the Half-Orc. Afterwards, Reinhalt led Finnegan into the forest and murdered him, as he though it would be best for his client, The Bishop, and his companions.
