Kes'set is the leader of a band of five other Githzerai warriors. They are currently lieutenants in the Army in Ysgard.
Kes'set and his band hail from Limbo, namely the Githzerai capital of Shra'kt'lor where most of their race live. They had hoped to train as Rrak'ma, warriors who spend their life hunting and killing the hated Ilithids who had once enslaved the Githzerai race. Though they had entered the monastery and undergone their initial training as was expected of them, Kes'set began to have questions that upset his teachers. Why did the Githzerai only hunt Ilithids? Why was it that their crime was the enslavement of the Githzerai, when other races had also been enslaved? Why were other slaving races not equal targets of their wrath?
The Rrak'ma elders were patient at first, trying to explain the suffering of their race in ages past, that Kes'set had been born free and did not understand the history deeply enough. But those answers were unsatisfying, and his doubts continued to gnaw at him. Several of his training mates listened to him when he spoke, and slowly they began to develop their own ideas. That slavery itself was wrong, not simply the ancestral slavery of the Githzerai. That slavers themselves were the true enemy, not simply the Ilithids. And that freedom from slavery was the right of all living beings, and the Rrak'ma's duty should be to uphold it for all, not simply one race among dozens.
It was these ideas, and Kes'set's refusal to set them aside that earned him and his companions ejection from the monastery. Dejected, the Githzerai left Limbo and headed to Sigil, hoping to find a new path at the crossroads of the multiverse. Unfortunately, as it so often is, Sigil proved to be more than the young Githzerai could handle.
During their wandering in the Hive Ward, one member of the band was kidnapped by an Ilithid doctor from the Weary Spirit Infirmary, to be subjected to cruel experiments and torture. Kes'set and his band tried to attack the Infirmary to rescue their brother, only to be beaten back, several members killed and the rest forced to flee.
Desperate to save their brother, or at least avenge his death, the Githzerai band scoured Sigil for any allies. What they found was legends of somebody called “the Chainbreaker”, a warrior who had dedicated her life to battling slavers. A warrior named Helga Slaughter.
After tracking down Helga, Kes'set begged for her aid, and together they stormed the Weary Spirit, defeating its guards and rescuing their kidnapped brother. Though he had been cruelly maimed by the Ilithid's experiments, one of Helga's companions used healing magic to restore him, earning Kes'set's gratitude.(14).
Kes'set sees Helga as the ideal of everything he believed in, everything the Rrak'ma elders refused to accept. He and the other Githzerai will follow in her footsteps and learn what they can, taking the battle to slavers across the multiverse.
