The Beastlands is a plane of nature and animals, and is also known as the Happy Hunting Grounds. Peaceful alpine forests and groves of giant mushrooms can be found here. A varied climate exists across the plane, providing a suitable environment for many species of animals and plants. The number of traditional settlements is very small, with most inhabitants living beneath the trees out in the wilderness. The mortal souls that come to this plane after death take on animal traits soon after they arrive, developing pelts of fur and growing horns or pointed ears or other such features. Over the course of centuries they continue to slowly change, becoming celestial beasts. The plane is made up of three layers: Krigala, Brux and Karasuthra.
The first layer is Krigala, which is split in two by the River Oceanus. It is warm and usually sunny, except for a brief rainshower every “evening”, which marks “nightfall”, although in reality the sun never sets.
Ilifar-in-the-Wind is a huge tree which is home to the Avariels, or Winged Elves. Within the branches are buildings made of wood and marble. Although it is possible to get around by foot, it is clearly designed for winged beings. There is a portal directly to the tree from a private arboreum in the Lady's Ward in Sigil.
The leader of the tribe and tree is Prince Allarien, a handsome male avariel with long dark hair and golden eyes.
The Party met with Prince Allarien to get help locatingthe Bow of Thaas, and received some ceremonial items from him that will prove that they are allies to any Avaiels they might meet. They learned that he used to be part of an adventuring party with Anastrianna Amakiir, Allisiphone, and two other people named Orland and Diane.
Just south of the Ilifar-in-the-Wind is a mountain range inhabited by an Elder Air Elemental known as the Breath of Life. The Elemental sometime is angry and causes thunder and lightning but normally it is a gentle breeze unless asked to be different. The Party aided Breath of LIfe by halting a Slaad infestation on his mountains, and by informing him of the rising threat of the Shadow Lord.
East of Ilifar-in-the-Wind, and North of Breath of life, there is a wide plain called the Pridelands, which is home to the Wemic (centaur lion) tribe. The Party heard from Prince Allarian that some powerful Druids had recently gone to the Wemic's lands on some urgent matter, but do not know what it is. Further East is a forest said to be inhabited by some sort of plant monsters.
Past the Pridelands and a Forest is the Pool of Allisiphone, the water Nymph who rescued Amakiir's remains from the Abyss.
Allisiphone's pool has been fouled by some dark magic, and she has been sickend by the pollution. The Planeswalkers are currently on a journey upstream to find the source of the problem.
Brux is the second layer of the Beastlands. The sun is a great ball of red and the land is mostly jungle and bogs. The animal life is more active during the day and quieter at night or dusk.
Calonveriel grew up in Brux.
The third layer is called Karasuthra or The Hunt. It is covered in darkness at all times with a silver moon. Some of the most dangerous monster reside here as it is the land of the hunt to all travellers.
A powerful Druid, Amakiir was a member of an adventuring party along with Allisiphone the Water Nymph and Prince Allarien the Avariel, and two other people named Orland and Dianne. After they parted ways, Amakiir continued to battle with the demons of the Abyss. She was finally killed, and Allisiphone rescued her remains from the lower planes and buried her in Karasuthra. She was buried with a holy artifact called The Bow of Thaas.
The legends of the Bow of Thaas say it lies on the burial mound of the druid Anastrianna Amakiir. Many accounts say Amakiir was buried in Karasuthra, and the Party's talk with Prince Allarien seem to bear this out.
The same accounts tell of Demons who still bear a grudge against Amakiir and Forest Hart, even in death, and many enterprising fiends seek favour with their Dark Lords by invading the Beastlands to find and desecrate her last resting place. None have succeeded, as the Beast Lords unite against such an invasion. But if anyone wanted to find Amakiir's burial mound, any stories of Demonic invaders would almost certainly point in the right direction.
